Big Dairy Substitutions List

The goal here is to show common substitutions that are generally available in major grocery stores. These are all based on my experience if you have any recommendations let me know. I’m happy to add more. 🙂 Contact me anytime, I’m here to help. Happy substitutions!

  • Butter
    • Regular butter
      • Comment: Plain butter has low lactose content.
      • Avoid: Reduced fat or light butters their lactose content is too high. I avoid margarines because each brands’ lactose content varies too much for me to feel safe.
      • Availability: Everywhere
    • Earth Balance Buttery Spread (any variety)
      • Comment: No lactose content and taste very similar to butter.
      • Availability: Most major grocery stores
    • Ghee
    • Margarines
      • Comment: I usually avoid this because the each brands lactose content varies so why chance it when I can have regular butter
  • Cheese
    • Blue Cheese
    • Brie
    • Cheddar Cheese (Mild, Medium, Sharp, Extra Sharp)
      • Comment: Sharp cheddar is my go to cheese. I use it on everything from nachos to burgers. I’ve eaten the other cheddar cheeses with no problems, but I’m too scared to order it at a restaurant.
    • Gouda
    • Homemade Cheese
    • Muenster
      • Comment: I usually use this for my artisan flatbread pizzas 🙂
    • Nutritional Yeast
      • Comment: I use this to mix in a sauce or for that hidden cheese taste. You can also sprinkle it, it tastes like cheese salt.
    • Parmesan
    • Provolone
    • Swiss Cheese
  • Chocolate
    • Dark Chocolate (60% cacao or more)
      • Comment: At least 60% Cacao. Brands in Lindt, Ghirardelli, Green & Black’S, Sam’s Choice
    • Dark Chocolate Chips (60% cacao)
      • Comment: I use these all the time to make chocolate chip cookies.
    • Oreos
      • Comment: Yes those Oreos have no milk chocolate in them.
  • Cookies
    • Oreos
      • Comment: Yes those Oreos have no milk chocolate in them.
  • Creamer (and Half & Half)
    • Silk Almond Creamer
      • Availability: Most major grocery stores
  • Heavy Cream
    • Carnation Almond Cooking Milk
      • Availability: Most major grocery stores
  • Ice Cream
    • Ben & Jerry’s Non-Dairy Ice Cream and Bars
    • Haagen Daz Non-Dairy Ice Cream (any flavor)
    • Haagen Daz Sorbet (any flavor)
      • Comment: One of the best things in life 🙂
      • Availability: Target, Publix
    • Halo Top Dairy-Free Ice Cream
    • Magnum Non-Dairy Bars
    • So Delicious Soy Ice Cream
    • So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream and Bars
    • So Delicious Dairy Free Almond Milk Ice Cream and Bars
    • So Delicious Cashew Milk Ice Cream and Bars
    • Talenti Dairy-Free Sorbetto
  • Milk
    • Fairlife Milk
      • One to one replacement for milk
    • Product: Silk Soy Milk
      • Availability: Most major grocery stores
      • Comments: This use to be my go to milk. You will notice it taste different than milk. Silk has several milk product various of this and you
  • Sour Cream
    • Greek yogurt (whole or non fat)
      • Comment: This can replace it in most cases when sour cream is not the star of the dish
  • Yogurt
    • Greek Yogurt (whole or non fat)
      • Comment: Not like regular yogurt. It is thick, creamy, and tangy.  In contract to plain yogurt which is light, creamy, sweet in the background.
    • Silk Soy Yogurt
      • Comment: I usually buy this. There are lots of flavors some better than others. I like strawberry the most.
    • Yogurt with Live Cultures
      • Comment: I still haven’t worked up the courage to try this because it varies so much from brand to brand. If I were though it’ll be whole milk plain yogurt with live cultures (aka probiotics) in the ingredients, it’ll say all of this on the label.
